I would like to agree with that.... the few times I have played on it, it has been especially lame and plays out one-sided. (not to mention I lost this game pretty awesomely)

It's too easy to block the base capture. You can't join infantry with the base inf since the attacking unit will be in your way.
This hasn't been a problem for me yet since both of my opponents spread themselves far too thin to harass my inf. So I just outfunded them and built more vehicles than they could handle.
A recon stops the base capture completely, however, since its positioning will block inf from joining. That will pay for itself since it causes the opponent to lose out on funding from the base for at least 3 turns and forces him to divert infantry that would be used for capturing other properties.
The best defense your opponent will have available at that moment will be a recon. It won't dent yours enough to do anything, so that recon is better off harassing your capturing inf in response.
I suppose one could also try not going for either base. The airport is pretty threatening and will allow you to retake your base easily, after all. It's possible that that, combined with earlier vehicles, will deal with anything that the opponent attempts.
