He is in a position to see the great moves and the great follies of the game.
I once came across a few lines pertaining to wargaming that read: "Infamy! Infamy! They all have it in for me!" Sometime in the middle of this game, the rhyme of those lines came to me with new words: "Lunacy! Lunacy! All I see is Luna-cy!" Time after time I saw the players behaving in ways guaranteed to help Luna and hurt themselves. Luna Crescens ran away with this game because everyone else failed to make a concerted effort to bring him down. More often than not, the factions were looking to Luna for assistance in hurting someone else or some other group. Parma's one great effort to bring down Luna cost him everything when it failed. After that, the factions kept falling further and further behind as Luna's power grew to an unassailable height. Luna Crescens indeed worked very hard throughout our game to maintain communications with all players. He was a convincing diplomat who managed almost always to gain something from his communication efforts, even if only to keep alive the mistrust between the other factions. The communication level of other players never came close to that of Luna, for Luna was always communicating with the factions he was supposedly opposing, even as he was conniving to plot mischief for friends and foes alike. It is almost unbelievable the way he managed to talk his way out of the most damaging revelations of his betrayals. So the word "Luna-cy" came to be defined in my mind as the act of behaving in a way that helped Luna Crescens. By that definition, there was plenty of "Luna-cy" going around in Game Auctoritas.
Manus had the most rotten luck in this game in losing so much to epidemics. Without those bad breaks, he might have given Luna a better race and perhaps might even have changed the outcome. Aquila and Manus managed to work well together--they were the next best communicators after the masterful Luna. I suspect that after initially sending messages to all factions, Luna found Manus and Aquila to be the most communicative and consequently set about forging the initial triumvirate. Yes, it was Luna who engineered that, but it was Aquila who championed the sharing of power with others. Aquila got his way and Corona was offered an office, only to reject it! From my perspective as GM, it sems likely that had Corona leveraged himself into higher Influence by taking the office and winning a military victory, he would have been in good shape to gain more members to his faction through Forum Phase persua- sions. Had Corona opened himself to partnership with all the other factions, he might well have taken a leadership role in crushing Luna. There was one point when I almost thought that Corona was going to take on that role and forge ahead in Influence, but the opportunity was passed by and it never came again.
Porta never had many votes. He was, however, in a position to throw the decisive votes one way or the other on many an occasion. He even had his own brand of devious conniving, but in this game did not achieve the level of communication with all other players that Luna achieved. Even so, Porta managed to finish with more Influence than any other faction save for Luna.
Parma is a strategic expert in Republic of Rome. When he points out how to win a war, his plan bears listening to. It is normally a very sound and well-thought out plan. It was a surprise, therefore, to see Parma also duped by Luna, although it must be said that Parma made a very valiant effort to bring him down. However, against a master diplomat such as Luna, one must recognize the enemy and turn on him early. Parma unfortunately took the position of trying to avoid early alliances, so Luna was able to grow strong enough that he could thwart efforts to rein him in. By the time Parma saw how terrible the danger was, he was forced to risk an assassination which, in the end, caused his own utter demise as a participant. Had he remained in the game, it is quite likely that Parma would have been communicating long and frequently with all players to find a way to crush Luna. So Luna Crescens earns a well-deserved victory. The rest of the factions should study his methods and learn from them. His great achievement was always leaving open the doors of communication. It worked out very well. For Luna it was the key to victory. 19 November 2001 GM: Lou Jerkich Lou's Home Status Deck Turn 6 Turn 7 Joan's Home
